In Brief: Center for Texas Music History hosts Texas songwriter discussion, book signing

The Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University will host a discussion and book signing for Pickers & Poets: The Ruthlessly Poetic Singer-Songwriters of Texas 7-9 p.m. on Texas Independence Day, Thursday, March 2.

The event will be held at The Wittliff Collections. It is free and open to the public.

Editors Craig Hillis and Craig Clifford will be on hand to perform examples of ruthlessly poetic songcraft and to discuss the volume’s essays with a panel of authors who contributed to the collection, featuring Diana Finlay Hendricks, Brian T. Atkinson and Jenni Finlay. Book sales and signing will follow the event.

Hillis and Clifford’s Pickers & Poets explores the fierce and vulnerable lyricism of the Texas singer-songwriter tradition. In it, an array of authors well-versed in regional culture write on Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Willie Nelson and Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Robert Earl Keen, Hayes Carll and Terri Hendrix, and just about every songwriter in between. The book is part of the John and Robin Dickson Series in Texas Music from Texas A&M University Press. The John and Robin Dickson Series is one of the major projects of Texas State’s Center for Texas Music History.
