Texas State Announces Fulbright Awards for 2022-2023

Texas State University is pleased to announce that seven Texas State students and one recent graduate have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to conduct individually designed research/creative projects and pursue English Teaching Assistantships for the 2022-2023 academic year.

As Fulbright participants, the students and recent alumnus listed below will study, conduct research, and teach abroad for the 2022-2023 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and/or professional achievement, and record of service. As Fulbright alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed alumni, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Fulbright alumni include 61 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients, and 40 who have served as a head of state or government.

Amy Biedermann
Doctoral student studying adult, professional, and community education
Fulbright award: Romania; English Teaching Assistant Program
Amy will be placed in a Romanian university, where she will dedicate her passion for equity and access through global English learning curriculums and offer design thinking workshops that explore the cultural values of American and Romanian societies.

Simran Chadha
Master's student studying student affairs in higher education
Fulbright award: Germany; English Teaching Assistant Diversity Program

Genevieve Hauer
Bachelor's student studying religious studies with minors in Honors, theatre, and Chinese
Fulbright award: Taiwan; English Teaching Assistant Program
Genevieve will teach English and American culture in an elementary school, high school, or university in Taiwan, where she will bring her experience in theatre and stage production to her teaching practice and service activities in her local community.

Christopher Le
Master's student studying school psychology with an emphasis on autism
Fulbright award: Vietnam; Study/Research Award
Christopher will conduct bilingual behavioral research on intergenerational conflict within contemporary Vietnamese families in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Mihn city, affiliating with the Vietnam National University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Sophia Mavroudas
Doctoral student studying applied anthropology
Fulbright award: Greece; Study/Research Award
Sophia will conduct anthropological research at the University of Crete and the Democritus University of Thrace to study forensic processes in the Greek medicolegal system for identifying human remains and the relevance for deceased migrant cases along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cole McNabb — Alumnus
Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, English & German
Fulbright award: Germany; English Teaching Assistant Program
Cole, an aspiring linguist, will teach English and American culture at an elementary school, middle school, secondary school, or university in Germany to gain experience in second-language acquisition, a field in which he plans to earn his MA after his Fulbright.

Chisom Ogoke
Master's student studying creative writing with an emphasis on fiction
Fulbright award: Barbados; Study/Research Award (creative & performing arts)
Chisom will conduct artistic research at the National Cultural Foundation, the National Library Service, and the University of the West Indies (Cave Hill) to investigate the oral storytelling practices in Barbadian culture for her current novel, a continuation of her MFA thesis.

Dustin Sanchez
Doctoral student studying geography
Fulbright: Kosovo; Study/Research Award
Dustin, a veteran of the Iraq War, will leverage his interdisciplinary background in military intelligence, environmental analysis, history, and geography to investigate the environmental consequences of conflict through a case study of Kosovo’s wine industry in affiliation with the University of Pristina.

“We are so proud of these Texas State students and also of our recent alumnus. Collectively, these students will travel to seven countries on three continents, while engaging in meaningful teaching and research activities and serving as outstanding cultural ambassadors for the United States, our institution, and our diverse campus community. Their having been selected inspires us, and will motivate more of our remarkable students to apply to the flagship Fulbright U.S. Student Program,” said Dr. Gene Bourgeois, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Texas State University.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered at Texas State University by the TXST Fulbright Program Advisers (FPAs). Students and recent alumni interested in applying should contact the university FPA corresponding to their degree level.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program.

Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants from over 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research, through which grantees exchange cultural ideas and explore solutions to shared international concerns.
