Classes cancelled Thursday and Friday, February 3 and 4

Due to winter storm warnings and advisories, anticipated icy conditions, and the significant impact this will have on travel, Texas State University will cancel classes (in-person and online) and suspend operations on Thursday, February 3, and Friday, February 4, 2022, at the San Marcos and Round Rock Campuses.

Due to hazardous driving conditions, the university shuttle service will be suspended. Transportation Services will send an email with additional information. Limited dining options will be available on the San Marcos Campus for students who have meal plans. Students who live in on-campus residence halls will receive an email from the Department of Housing and Residential Life with more information.

Although another statewide extreme weather event like Texas experienced last February is not forecasted or expected this week, the university has taken the following steps to minimize impacts from the winter weather:

  • Dining Services has reviewed inventory to provide food and water for all students in campus housing and staff who will be on our campuses.
  • Outdoor solar charging stations have been installed at various locations on the San Marcos campus to supply additional power sources.
  • Critical staff are being provided overnight lodging on our campuses.
  • All emergency generators are fueled up and tested.
  • Extra sand has been purchased and stored onsite to be applied on areas prone to ice accumulation.
  • Redundant communication mechanisms are in place to help the university community stay connected and informed.

Below are recommendations on staying safe and informed during the closure:

  • Monitor your Texas State email for additional information and updates. Watch for weather alerts released via text message and email through the TXState Alerts emergency notification system. You can also find information at Safety and Emergency Communications.
  • If you have not signed up to receive text message alerts, you can do so at Sign Up for TXState Alerts
  • Stay indoors throughout the storm as much as possible. Precipitation and freezing temperatures will make driving hazardous. Stay off the roads and avoid driving if possible.
  • Move your vehicle if it is parked in the upper levels of a parking garage.
  • Use caution when walking outside as sidewalks may become slippery. Avoid parking your car under a tree or walking under a tree, to avoid falling ice.
  • Avoid travel between floors using elevators due to potential for power loss and entrapment.
  • Report accidents and injuries to the University Police Department at 9-1-1.
  • Telephone calls should be limited since non‐emergency calls can overload the phone systems.
  • To preserve power in the event of an outage, turn off all unnecessary lighting and appliances.
  • Gather helpful supplies, such as blankets, gloves, non-perishable food items, water, portable chargers, batteries, LED lanterns and flashlights.
  • Do not use candles during power outages due to the increased fire hazard.
  • Fuel up vehicles, if possible. A running vehicle can be used to charge phones and devices in case of a power outage, but this must be done in a well-ventilated area to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Have a plan to communicate with friends and loved ones by text message on a routine basis to let them know you are well.
  • Follow the instructions of government officials and university administration.
