Texas State announces new associate vice president for student affairs

David Byrd has been named associate vice president for the Division of Student Affairs at Texas State University.

He began Sep. 7, 2021. 

As a member of the division’s senior leadership team, Byrd will oversee and support the LBJ Student Center, Department of Student Involvement and the Department of Campus Recreation. He will also be responsible for the advancement of the division’s development efforts as they relate to Texas State’s advancement goals, and will serve and lead a variety of division initiatives and university committees.  

“I am incredibly excited to join a division with an outstanding reputation for creating and offering student engagement experiences that promote student success,” Byrd said. “I look forward to serving Texas State's diverse student population so all Bobcats feel empowered to achieve their academic goals while concurrently developing into the future leaders poised to improve our local, national and global community.”

Byrd comes to Texas State with 23 years of experience in higher education, most recently as the associate dean for admissions and student services at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

“Dr. Byrd brings an exceptional record of achievement focused on the development and success of diverse student learners,” said Texas State Vice President for Student Affairs Cynthia Hernandez. “Dr. Byrd is bringing his wealth of experience in working with students to reinvigorate and create new identity conscious student organizations and other engagement experiences that enhance sense of belonging and student success.”

At the UT Health San Antonio, Byrd designed and implemented the School of Nursing Student Success Center and secured a $2.5 million U.S. Department of Education Title V Developing Hispanic Serving Institutions grant that provided financial resources for the center. Prior to his time at the UT Health Science Center, Byrd served at Texas A&M University as the assistant dean for undergraduate academic affairs in the College of Education and Human Development where he lead the Byrne Center for Student Success. Early in his career, he served as director of recruitment and a recruiter for the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M.  

Byrd received his bachelor’s degree in history, master’s degree in agricultural education and doctoral degree in higher education administration from Texas A&M.
