Texas State University and the City of San Marcos have signed a pilot agreement with Spin electric scooters for an initial two-step deployment of 200 shared scooters beginning this month.

A launch event for Spin scooters will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23 on Bobcat Trail adjacent to the Quad at Texas State. There will be a helmet giveaway and safety briefing. All participants and presenters are required to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

Spin, a dockless electric scooter share company, is providing the scooters at no cost to the university and the city. Scooters will cost $1 to unlock and 29 cents per minute of use. Hours of scooter operation are 6:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. Riders should note that scooters must be parked in the designated scooter zone to end the ride and avoid accruing additional fees.

To locate and unlock a nearby scooter via a smartphone, download the Spin app. Users who enter the promo code TXST will receive $5 off their first ride. Additional safety measures include COVID-19 disinfection.
