In Brief: Texas State celebrates Constitution Day with guest lecture, other events

James R. Stoner, Jr., will deliver a lecture on September 19 at Texas State University, as part of the university’s Constitution Day celebration.

The lecture, titled “The Positive Liberty of Speech,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Alkek Library Teaching Theatre.

Stoner is the Hermann Moyse, Jr. Professor of Political Science at Louisiana State University. He is the author of the books Common-Law Liberty: Rethinking American Constitutionalism and Common Law and Liberal Theory: Coke, Hobbes, and the Origins of American Constitutionalism, as well as a number of essays and articles. He is also the director of the Eric Voegelin Institute in the Department of Political Science at LSU.

In addition to the lecture, the fall 2017 Philosophy Dialogue Series will offer several programs to mark Constitution Day. More information can be found at www.txstate.edu/philosophy/dialogue-series/Dialogue-Schedule.html.

Texas State Student Government will also be handing out pocket Constitutions and organizing a voter registration drive.

The lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Political Science, the Department of Philosophy, the Philosophy Dialogue Series and the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History.
