University of Texas at San Antonio professor Daniel Gelo will speak at Texas State University’s Brazos Hall on Wednesday, March 29.

The lecture, titled “A Fresh Look at the Fort Parker Raid of 1836,” will be at 3:30 p.m.

Gelo will provide insight on the Fort Parker raid, based on eyewitness accounts and his understanding of indigenous geopolitical strategies at the time. His lecture will challenge both the standard account of the raid and some recent interpretations, revealing the identity of the attackers and what were their motivations.

Gelo is a professor of anthropology, the Stumberg Distinguished University Chair and dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at UTSA, where he has taught and researched since 1988.

The lecture is sponsored by the Department of History and the Center for the Study of the Southwest.
