Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos to address fall 2016 commencement at Texas State

United States District Court Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos will be the keynote speaker at one of six commencement ceremonies to be held at Texas State University on December 16-17 in the university’s Strahan Coliseum.

Ramos, a Distinguished Alumna of Texas State will speak during the 11 a.m. ceremony December 16, to be attended by degree candidates from the College of Fine Arts and Communication, University College and the Graduate College.

Degree candidates from College of Liberal Arts, including the Department of Anthropology, Department of English, Department of Geography, Department of History, Center for International Studies, Department of Modern Languages, Department of Political Science, Department of Sociology and the Graduate College will attend the 2 p.m. commencement ceremony December 16.

Degree candidates from the College of Health Professions, College of Liberal Arts, including the Department of Philosophy and Department of Psychology, College of Science and Engineering, and the Graduate College will attend the 6 p.m. commencement ceremony December 16.

Degree candidates from the College of Applied Arts, including the School of Criminal Justice and the School of Social Work, College of Education, including the Department of Counseling, Leadership, Adult Education and School Psychology, and the Department of Health and Human Performance, and the Graduate College will attend the 10 a.m. ceremony December 17.

Degree candidates from the College of Applied Arts, including the Department of Agriculture, School of Family and Consumer Sciences, Department of Occupational, Workforce and Leadership Studies, and College of Education, including the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the Graduate College will attend the 2 p.m. ceremony December 17.

Degree candidates from the McCoy College of Business Administration and the Graduate College will attend the 6 p.m. ceremony December 17.

More than 3,200 students are candidates for undergraduate and graduate degrees at Texas State this fall. An overflow room with live video of the ceremonies will be available.

Judge Ramos was appointed a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Texas, Corpus Christi Division, in 2011. She graduated from Texas State in 1987 with a B.S. in education, summa cum laude, and from the University of Texas School of Law with honors in 1991.

Before becoming a federal judge, she was a state district court judge in the 347th District Court of Nueces County for more than 10 years. During that time, she served as the local administrative judge for the Nueces County District Courts and presided over the domestic violence court. Judge Ramos was previously a municipal court judge for the City of Corpus Christi. As an attorney with the law firm of Meredith, Donnell and Abernethy, her practice included insurance defense and personal injury and employment litigation.

Judge Ramos currently serves as a member of the Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System. She previously served as chair of the National Conference for Community and Justice and vice president of the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse–Coastal Bend. She is a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi, Class 27.
