Texas State's Jason Mellard honored for book on 1970s Texas history

Jason Mellard, assistant director of the Center for Texas Music History at Texas State University, has been awarded the 2013 Coral Horton Tullis Memorial Prize for Best Book on Texas History.

Mellard’s book, Progressive Country: How the 1970’s Transformed the Texan in Popular Culture, is the subject receiving the distinction from the Texas State Historical Association. The award, established in 1967, is accompanied by a $2,000 stipend and a certificate to be presented at the association’s annual meeting.

Mellard works on the publication of the Journal of Texas Music History offered by the Center for Texas Music History, as well as the weekly NPR segment This Week in Texas Music History. In addition to his contributions to media, Mellard will be teaching a course on the history of rock and roll in the fall.
