Texas State University’s Department of Theater and Dance will present The Other Side, a thesis concert directed and choreographed by graduating students Emily Thompson, Jonathan Himawan, Molly Waldner and Raquel Gomez-Simmons March 21-22.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Evans Auditorium on campus.

The Other Side will feature choreographic fusions of several different dance genres, all demonstrating the technical and artistic talents that these four choreographers have come to achieve through their years studying dance at Texas State. Thompson will showcase an athletic, high energy piece as well as a reflective video dance. Thompson will also be resetting and reworking her dance titled "Shadow," which she describes as a “dedication to a part of us that comes and goes and is often forgotten.”

Himawan, who strives for individuality, challenges himself to define movement creation in his own way. He will present four numbers, including a fusion of lindy hop and breaking.

Waldner will showcase her athletic and intricate choreography. She considers her choreography to be a fusion of hip hop and contemporary, with musicality being one of her key assets. Waldner will be performing an enticing and enchanting solo, “Only Me,” which will be performed for the first time, along with three other first-time works.

Gomez-Simmons will be re-running an altered version of her ethnically-rooted “To the Eagles” as well as a new work of choreography, “Watch!” set to the solemn and hauntingly beautiful chants of Benedictine monks.

The concert will also feature an original, powerful work based on the media’s impact on body image and choreographed by guest artist and former Texas State alumna and graduate, Bonnie Cox. Parental caution is advised; this work will feature projected images that may be disturbing for young children to watch.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $7 for students (cash only), and may be purchased at the Evans box one hour prior to each performance. For more information, contact Shay Hartung-Ishii at (512) 245-2949.
