Texas State faculty, staff honored during Fall 2013 Convocation

Texas State University-San Marcos President Denise Trauth presented several faculty and staff awards during the Fall 2013 Convocation.

This year’s recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching are Cindy Royal, associate professor of mass communication, and Kym Fox, senior lecturer of journalism.

The two individuals who received this year’s Presidential Awards for Excellence in Scholarly and Creative Activities are Jian Shen, professor of mathematics, and Oleg Komogortsev, associate professor of computer science.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Service went to Roseann Mandziuk, professor of communication studies, and Kathy Ybañez-Llorente, associate professor of professional counseling.

This year’s recipient of the 2013-14 Presidential Seminar Award was Taylor Acee, assistant professor of developmental education.

The Alumni Association recognized Ann Burnette, associate professor of communication studies, as the recipient of the Teaching Award of Honor.

The faculty senate recognized Kenneth Margerison, professor of history, as the recipient of the Everette Swinney Faculty Senate Teaching Award. Margerison also became Texas State's 20th Piper Professor earlier this year, and will be honored with a reception on Sept. 26.

Robert McLean, professor of microbiology, was named 2012 Regents Professor by the Texas State University System Board of Regents, only the 17th in the system so honored.

This year’s new University Distinguished Professors include Michael Forstner, professor of biology; and Vedaraman Sriraman, professor of engineering technology.

The four retired faculty members who were named Distinguished Professors Emeriti were: James Randy Cook, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Computer Information Systems and Quantitative Methods; Robert Patton, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Health and Human Performance; Douglas Skinner, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Music; and James Irvin, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

This year’s recipients of the Excellence in Diversity Award were Patricia Prado, executive assistant in the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Support Services; and Eugene Lee, artist in residence and a faculty member in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

The award for 2013 Employee of the Year went to Elizabeth McDonald, events and publicity coordinator in the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

Winners of this year’s Mariel Muir Mentoring Awards were Lanita Legan, associate director of the LBJ Student Center; and Marian Houser, associate professor of communication studies.
