Texas State’s Health Promotion Services and peer education team, The Network, brings awareness to the global AIDS epidemic on Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center Mall area.  ‘Peace, Love, Latex’ will be the theme used to increase awareness about the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and prevention strategies and to reduce stigma and misinformation associated with the virus.

World AIDS Day is celebrated on Dec.1 each year around the world.  It has become one of the most recognized international health days and an important opportunity to raise awareness, commemorate those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.  Last year, more than 100 worldwide communities commemorated World AIDS Day with the Light for Rights Campaign, and UNAIDS reported signs of decline in new infections of the global AIDS epidemic.

World AIDS Day will be celebrated through playing educational games, condom races, and the distribution of resources and condom packets to students, faculty and staff.  This year, in addition to the events in the mall, Texas State has the privilege of displaying some of the AIDS Memorial Quilt in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The AIDS Memorial Quilt consists of more than 44,000 3-by-6-foot memorial panels that have been sewn together by friends, partners and family members to commemorate the lives of those who have died from AIDS.

Free and confidential testing and counseling will be performed through rapid oral HIV testing services sponsored by C.A.R.E. Services of Austin in the LBJ Ballroom from 10:00 am – 1:30 pm, and guest speaker, Joseph Duarte, from HIV Connection in Austin, will also host a panel discussion at 5:30 p.m. in the LBJ Multi-Purpose Room (3-15.1).

The quilt display and panel presentation is co-sponsored by Health Promotion Services, the Counseling Center, the Department of Housing and Residential Life, the Office of Equity and Access, the College of Liberal Arts, the Philosophy Department, The National Endowment for the Humanities, and the NEH Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities.
