Cress Terrell, a senior marketing major in the McCoy College of Business Administration at Texas State University-San Marcos, has been named American Marketing Association Student Marketer of the Year.

Terrell was honored during the 33rd Annual American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans, beating out candidates from more than 310 AMA chapters located throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The award focuses attention on the ways AMA Collegiate members demonstrate excellence and commitment to AMA. Applicants were evaluated on service to AMA, impact of service, drive for academic excellence and essay responses.

Terrell said the award helped him feel 100 percent ready to enter the workforce.

“Without a doubt, I believe it when teachers tell you that the real learning takes part outside of the classroom and inside the hallways and student organizations of the college,” he said.

Terrell has been an active member of the Texas State AMA since transferring to Texas State the fall of 2009. He was named vice president of fundraising for spring 2010, and was responsible for developing an integrated marketing communication plan to create awareness for the environmental service committee at Texas State.

Terrell served as president of the Texas State AMA for the 2010-11 academic year. During his tenure, the Texas State chapter added 12 additional professional development programs for its members for a total of 42. During the 33rd International AMA Collegiate Conference, Texas State was named a Gold Chapter, tying it for second place internationally.

“Cress is one of the most motivated individuals that I have ever met. I am not surprised that he won this award,” said Gail Zank, co-advisor of the Texas State AMA chapter. “It speaks to the high quality of our Texas State students that Cress won over all of the other entrants. He sets goals and then determines a plan to accomplish those goals. I have no doubt that his success will continue in the business world.”
