Martha Bejarano, a senior in the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University-San Marcos was recognized as an American Kinesiology Association National Scholar for 2010.

This is the first year the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) has presented the National Scholar Award. The recognition places Bejarano, a mother of four from Austin, among the top students in her field.

"Receiving this award makes all those days I stayed up late studying, spending weekends volunteering and not being able to see friends and family worthwhile," Bejarano said. "It's affirmation that hard work does and will pay off. It's not a question of can you succeed, it's whether you are willing to do and sacrifice what it takes to get there. My goal is to get into physical therapy school. Hopefully this award will help me stand out and aid in achieving that goal."

The AKA cited Bejarano's involvement in organizations such as the Texas State Pre-Physical Therapy Organization, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, volunteer work for Angel Food Distribution Ministry, as a physical therapy assistant and her 3.92 grade point average among their reasons for selecting her for the award.
