The Multicultural Music Program at the Texas State University-San Marcos School of Music will host its 11th annual “La Feria del Mariachi” at Strahan Coliseum, on Saturday, May 1, at 7 p.m.

This year’s La Voz de Oro Award will be presented to Angeles Ochoa, music composer and singer, who has contributed with her talent to the preservation and expansion of the music genre in Mexico, the United States and all Latin America.

“We are honored to have Angeles Ochoa as the recipient of this distinguished award; her contributions to the music world are a valuable treasure in our music culture,” said John Lopez, multicultural music program director at Texas State.

La Feria del Mariachi 2009 hosted 400 competitors representing schools from across Texas and more than 3,000 attendants at the concert.

“Last year’s event was extremely successful and we hope that this year will be nothing short of the same,” Lopez said.

The first La Voz de Oro Award was presented last year to Pedro Fernandez, reknown singer, artist and composer of popular and mariachi music. In addition, Nadia, de la Academia is scheduled to sing with Mariachi Nueva Generacion, Texas State’s own mariachi orchestra that has received several awards in competitions throughout the state. Nadia, who is a Grammy award winner, will be presented with the Rising Star Award at the concert.

Weekend events will include:

  • Mariachi competition for scholastic and community groups. Competitors will be judged on voice, violin, trumpet, armonia and overall
  • Mariachi workshops on instrumental and vocal techniques, taught by members of Mariachi Campanas de America
  • A mariachi concert featuring Mariachi Campanas de America, the 2010 winners of the festival ensemble competition, Mariachi Nueva Generacion and Texas State’s other mariachi ensembles.
