Demond Green, a 2003 theatre alumnus of Texas State University-San Marcos, has been honored with a 2009 Drama Desk Award nomination.

Green was nominated in the category of Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in The Toxic Avenger Musical. Gregory Jbara won the category for his role in Broadway’s Billy Elliot The Musical.

The Toxic Avenger Musical, an Off-Broadway production based on the 1984 Troma motion picture, received the 2009 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical.

“The Drama Desk Awards are the only theatre awards in which Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off- Off-Broadway productions compete against each other,” said Department of Theatre and Dance Chair John Fleming. “Other nominees included Geoffrey Rush, Ethan Hawke and Angela Lansbury. Being beaten out by a Tony Award-nominated actor from Billy Elliot--the hottest ticket on Broadway this year--only underscores Demond’s accomplishment.”

Green attended Texas State from 1999-2003, performing in a mixture of plays and musicals. Since graduating, Green has performed in regional theatre around the country, including a revival of The Wiz in California.
