Regents approve new scoreboards for Texas State sports venues

Fans of Texas State University Bobcat sports teams will see dramatic changes in the future when they attend athletic events at Bobcat Stadium, Strahan coliseum and the baseball and softball fields at Bobcat Field.

The Texas State University System Board of Regents has authorized the university to spend up to $1.5 million to install new scoreboards at Texas State sports venues. The package will also include new marquees on Aquarena Springs Drive in front of Strahan Coliseum and on the back of the new football board facing Aquarena Springs Drive and Post Road.

“We are very excited about this project and can’t wait to get started,” said Texas State Director of Athletics Larry Teis. “This will take the Bobcat game experience to a new and better level for our fans.”

The new scoreboards will be built by Daktronics of Brookings, S.D., and include Daktronics ProStar Video Displays. The displays will be capable of showing live video, instant replays, animation, graphics and other information using full color LED technology.

The scoreboard for football at Bobcat Stadium will be the largest of the new scoreboards, encompassing approximately 1,800 square feet. It will contain a video screen measuring 390 square feet.

“We look forward to working with Texas State on this unique campus-wide system,” said Dan Fjeldheim, of Daktronics large sports venue sales for Texas. “Our experience from the installation of scoring and display systems at more than 1,000 college venues is something that Texas State student athletes and fans will truly appreciate. The new scoreboards and video screens will provide for even greater excitement and entertainment at Texas State athletic facilities.”

Fjeldheim added that the new scoreboards will be comparable to most major college athletic programs in the United States.

Teis said the immediate priority would be to have the football scoreboard installed and ready for the Bobcats’ home opening game Sept. 1 against Cal Poly.

“We are going to get to work right away on this. The home opener against Cal Poly features two outstanding football programs, and it promises to be one of the best opening games ever at Bobcat Stadium. Having the new scoreboard up and running will add to the excitement,” said Teis.

A timeline for installation of the remaining scoreboards and the marquee will be announced at a later date, Teis said.

The new scoreboards will also provide opportunities for advertising and internships, Texas State Athletic Department officials announced.
