Richardson Foundation boosts Mathworks Teaching Collaborative

SAN MARCOS—The Texas Mathworks Teaching Collaborative, a part of the Mathworks program at Texas State University-San Marcos, has received a grant from the Sid W. Richardson Foundation enabling the Collaborative to launch a major expansion.
“The grant will help establish Mathworks as a statewide program for our best and brightest high school students,” said Max Warshauer, Mathworks director. “It will help us extend the Mathworks summer program to an academic year program that will serve talented high school students locally during the school year and statewide during the summer.”
Texas Mathworks is a center for mathematics education at Texas State, with a mission to develop model programs and self-sustaining learning communities for Texas K-12 students that engage students in doing mathematics at a high level.
Mathworks received the 2001 Star Award from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for “Closing the Gaps.” This exciting initiative is a partnership with San Marcos CISD that will provide exciting opportunities in mathematics for high school students during the school year. Richardson teaching fellows, undergraduates from Texas State, will work with high school students during the school year; and high school students will have an early opportunity to take mathematics courses at Texas State. A summer component, the Honor Summer Math Camp, serves talented students both locally and from throughout the state.
The support from the Sid W. Richardson Foundation totals $99,400. The foundation provides grants to nonprofit organizations in Texas to help them fulfill their missions. Grants are made primarily in education, healthcare, human services, and the arts.
