PSH Foundation continues support of Telehealth Program

Date of Release: 03/06/2006

SAN MARCOS—The PSH Foundation of Wimberley has continued its support of the Telehealth Program at Texas State University-San Marcos with a gift of $150,000.

The Telehealth Program, located in the Texas State Department of Physical Therapy utilizes telecommunication lines to allow students and staff to monitor the medical information of patients undergoing physical therapy at remote locations. It is used primarily for individuals with heart or lung disease who find travel to rehabilitation facilities difficult and for the economically disadvantaged.

Donald Shaw, director of Telehealth Program, said The PSH Foundation’s gift will be used to implement a marketing plan for the program, for operational expenses and for additional equipment.

“The PSH Foundation has been very supportive of telehealth. With the Foundation’s assistance, we are better able to serve patients in Texas who have very special needs because they live in rural or remote locations. The Foundation is helping us move toward self-sufficiency,” said Shaw.

This is The PSH Foundation’s second philanthropic gift to the Department of Physical Therapy. In 2003, the foundation contributed $204,000 to help establish the program.

Founded by Patti Sue Harrison, The PSH Foundation was established in 2001 as a grant-making entity supporting health, well-being, independence, public welfare and mental health in Texas communities. It supports arts and cultural affairs, educational health services, human services and religious organizations.

“The Telehealth Program makes cardiac rehabilitation available to anyone with a telephone. In most cases, patients don’t even have to leave their home to receive the service,” said Shaw.
