Texas State announces summer band camps

Date of Release: 02/14/2006

SAN MARCOS—The Department of Bands will host a High School Summer Band Camp June 4-9 and a High School Marching Camp June 11-14 on the campus of Texas State University-San Marcos.

The camps--returning to Texas State after a one-year absence--provide excellent music education and performance opportunities combined with enjoyable extracurricular activities for all students.

The June 4-9 High School Band Camp is for students entering grades 9-12, while the June 11-14 High School Marching Camp will involve drum majors, color guard and marching percussion. Prominent music educators from throughout the nation have been selected as clinicians and directors for the Texas State Band Camps. Texas State will welcome the nationally renowned SASI Drum Major Camp to San Marcos, a new program that has created excitement throughout the state of Texas.

During the concert camps, all wind and percussion performers will participate in a concert band and may also audition for placement in a brass, woodwind or percussion ensemble. The concert bands, divided by ability, will be conducted by Rod Schueller, director of bands at Texas State, and Jeremy Spicer of Cedar Park High School. In addition to instrumental master classes and sectionals, students will choose from the following classroom courses: music theory, rhythm techniques, composition, band conducting, orchestral conducting and class piano.

The concert camp also provides students with a well-rounded musical experience in ensembles such as salsa band and jazz band, and all students participating in the camp will have the opportunity to study privately with the distinguished Texas State Music Camp instrumental faculty. Private lessons are available on all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.

The typical camp day will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Each evening the students will participate in a variety of recreational activities such as dances, movies and a talent show. A free admission concert featuring both of the concert bands will occur the last day of camp in Evans Auditorium. The small ensembles will perform an evening concert on Thursday, June 8. The marching camps feature exhibitions on the final day of camp.

The Texas State Band Camps offer $150 scholarships for members of the TMEA or ATSSB All-State Bands, $100 for students who reached All-Area level, and $75 for members of any Region Bands. Additionally, scholarships in the amount of $75 are being offered for double reed performers for the first time ever. It should be noted that scholarships are offered for the concert camps only.
