Theatre Workshop Presents Award-winning Broadway play

SAN MARCOS – Texas State students will perform For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf by Ntozake Shange April 16-17 at 7:30 p.m. and April 18 at 2 p.m. in the Theatre Building’s Studio Theatre.

Admission is free for all performances, but a ticket is necessary for entrance. Tickets may be obtained at the Theatre Box Office. Parents are strongly advised that the production contains some adult language.

This moving production has been an overwhelming success from its inception in California in 1974 to its highly acclaimed critical success at Joseph Papp’s Public Theatre and the Booth Theatre on Broadway (1976-78). For Colored Girls… has earned Shange the 1977 Obie Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, the Audelco Award, and the Mademoiselle Award. It was nominated for the Tony, Grammy and Emmy awards. This groundbreaking dramatic choreopoem has excited audiences all over the country with its vivid language resonating with beauty in its fierce message to the world. For Colored Girls, a drama of self-celebration, unfolds in twenty poems presented by women representing the colors of the rainbow who reveal themselves, their lives, loves, hardships and ultimately their discovery of strength and self-love.

The Ethnic Theatre Workshop of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State will showcase this compelling work with a multicultural cast of 12 female students, representing the colors of the rainbow. This diverse cast is made up of both theatre students and students from other areas of the university (including Heath Care Administration, Communication Studies, Sociology and Anthropology). The production, directed by Dr. Sandra Mayo, Associate Professor of Theatre, and Director of the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies, features Temple Clark, Veronica Esparza, Kendra Franklin, Faylita Hicks, Jen Labbay, Angela Maldonado, Jennifer Minor, Jessica Ramirez, Karen Sours, Deepthi Thomas, Devon Wilson, and Megan Yancy—with Jovanic Evans as understudy. Rene Gomez, Jovanic Evans, and Chris Huff form the supporting crew. Jennifer Johnson, Administrative Assistant for the Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies and Texas State Alumnus (BFA, 1999) provides music research, photography, and webpage design.
