SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Woman vs. man, a never-ending debate of who does what better, has never been so poignantly displayed than in Shakespeare’s classic Taming of the Shrew.
Southwest Texas State University’s Debra Charlton directs one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies while combining it with an anonymous play of the same period, The Taming of a Shrew. The production pushes the boundaries of political correctness in the battle of the sexes. Mingling Shakespeare’s classic text with images drawn from popular culture, the production features an opening dance sequence rivaling the best of 1980s sexploitation music videos.
Starring senior theatre major, Debbie DeSimone as the beautiful but tempestuous Kate, and junior Andrew Phoenix as Petruchio, the only man brave enough to woo her, the production promises that this is not your mother’s Shakespeare. The production, which opens Wednesday, April 11, is for mature audiences due to its sexual imagery and allusions.
The play runs Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings through April 20, beginning at 8:15 p.m. with a final show on Saturday, April 21 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for students with ID.
