SWT slates celebrity events in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — The stars will shine in San Marcos on May 2 as Southwest Texas State University hosts its annual Celebrity Celebration Dinner, featuring several Hollywood performers and former professional athletes.

Tickets for the gala dinner and scholarship fund-raiser are currently on sale through the SWT Office of University Advancement. For information, call (512) 245-2396. The event begins at 6 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center Ballroom on the SWT campus. Tickets for the Celebrity Celebration Dinner are $45 per person and must be purchased in advance. The price includes dinner and entertainment.

One of today’s hottest stand-up comedians, Bill Engvall, will be the featured entertainer at the dinner.

Engvall, whose comedy albums Here’s Your Sign and Dorkfish have been smash hits, will be joined by dozens of other celebrities to raise money for SWT student scholarships.

Engvall, a native of Galveston, co-starred in the television comedy series The Jeff Foxworthy Show and is now performing his comedy act before packed houses around the country.

Musical entertainment will be provided by Hollywood performer Ronny Cox and his son, John. Ronny Cox is best known for his role in the movie Deliverance. He played guitar in the classic Dueling Banjos scene. He has starred in many other movies and television series.

Actor Patrick Wayne, son of film legend John Wayne, will host a live auction after the evening’s entertainment.

Other celebrities attending the event include G.W. Bailey (M*A*S*H, Police Academy), Ann Cusack (The Jeff Foxworthy Show), Barry Corbin (Northern Exposure), Burton “Bubba” Gilliam (Blazing Saddles), former NFL quarterbacks Jim Hart and Kenny Stabler, Detroit Lion and University of Texas tackle Doug English and many others.

The Celebrity Celebration Dinner is part of the annual SWT Celebrity Golf Classic, which will be played this year on Monday, May 3, at the Colo Vista Country Club in Bastrop.

Celebrity Weekend events at SWT begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 2, with the event’s first Celebrity Comedy Scramble at the SWT Golf Course at Aquarena Center.

The Celebrity Comedy Scramble is free and open to the public. The event will feature celebrity golfers taking their best shots at a variety of difficult golf placements.

Proceeds from the SWT Celebrity Golf Classic and related weekend events will benefit the G.W. Bailey scholarships at SWT. Bailey, a veteran of many television shows and motion pictures, is an alumnus of SWT.
