Fourth annual Images of Women conference March 27

Date of release: 02/22/99

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — The fourth annual Images of Women conference will be held Saturday, March 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the LBJ Student Center on the Southwest Texas State University campus.

The conference committee has determined that, as the population of Latinas in the United States increases, there is a continuing need to assure that their political, economic and cultural needs are met. Latinas: Afirmacion y Poder (Empowerment and Affirmation) has been chosen as this year‘s theme.

In order to reach as many Latinas as possible, the conference is being promoted nationwide and is expected to attract more than 350 delegates, thus making it one of the largest such conferences.

Several speakers are scheduled throughout the day, including two keynote addresses given by Cherrie Moraga, a Chicana writer, artist, playwright and poet, and Christy Haubegger, president and publisher of Latina magazine.

Other speakers include Anita Marcos, past chair of the Hispanic Women’s Network of Dallas; Shelly Soto, admissions assistant dean for the University of Texas School of Law; Josefina Castillo, program coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee; Susana Almanza of the People Organized in Defense of Earth and Her Resources (PODER); Laura Zarate of the Hays Caldwell Women’s Center; and Sandra Guzman, editor-in-chief of Latina magazine.

Pre-registration is $15 for students and $35 for non-student/professionals and must be mailed by March 5 to Images of Women Conference Team, Southwest Texas State University, Multicultural Student Affairs, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX 78666. Registrations after March 5, including those at the door on the day of the event, will be an additional $5.
