Volunteers needed for Sunshine Kids activities

Date of release: 05/27/98

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Volunteers are needed to welcome 30 young people from around the country as they embark on the ninth annual Sunshine Kids’ Texas Hill Country Adventure June 13-21.

The Sunshine Kids Foundation is a national, non-profit, volunteer organization, based in Houston, which provides positive growth activities for young people with cancer.

To assure that the more than 30 young people who are expected to participate have a comfortable stay volunteers are needed to prepare gift bags and dorm rooms on Friday, June 12, at 6 p.m. in Blanco Hall on the Southwest Texas State University campus.

Additional help is needed on Saturday, June 13, at 4 p.m. in Blanco Hall to meet and greet the visitors, help unload luggage and help locate rooms and get them settled in. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these events, please contact Fred March at (512) 245-2147.

Participants are also needed for a volleyball tournament with the Sunshine Kids scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Rec Center on the SWT campus. You don’t need to be an expert player to participate -- you don’t have to play at all -- just come and encourage them in their endeavors. If you are interested in participating in the tournament, please call Tony Daniels or John Johnson at SWT at (512) 245-2392.

During their eight-day visit to Central Texas the Sunshine Kids will also visit Gov. George W. Bush and members of the Texas Legislature, spend the day in San Antonio at the Imax Theater, the Alamo, Hard Rock Cafe and Sea World of Texas, as well as Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels, the Sunrise Exotic Ranch in Dripping Springs, University Camp in Wimberley and the Canyon Lake Marina.

Meals will be provided by Mamacita’s, the Hard Rock Cafe, Luby’s Cafeteria, Subway Sandwiches, John Henry’s, Central Market Cafe, San Marcos River Pub and Grill, Quail Creek Country Club and the Cashiers Office at SWT. Transportation through the week will be provided by Durham Transportation.

Individuals, organizations or corporations may become a Sunshine Kids Pardner by sending their tax-deductible checks in the amount of $350 or more, made payable to The Sunshine Kids Foundation, to Fred March, Theatre Department, Southwest Texas State University, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, TX 78666.
